5 Things You Need To Know Today: June 14

The Air Force Band of Liberty's New England Winds will perform a free concert tonight at the main Framingham Library at 7 p.m.

Our daily column, 5 Things You Need to Know Today, will help you to get your day started and offer you some fodder for water cooler conversation.

1. Today is Flag Day. According to the National Flag Day Foundation today in 1885  Bernard J. Cigrand, a teacher, just 19 years old, at Stony Hill School, placed a 10-inch, 38-star flag in a bottle on his desk then assigned essays on the flag and its significance. His observance, commemorated Congress' adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson  issued a proclamation calling for a nation-wide observance of Flag Day. And in 1949, President Harry Truman signed an Act Of Congress designating the 14th day of June every year as National Flag Day.

and Westminster Meat. In the showcase tent this week is Tortured Orchard Seasoning Sauce. is offering a free blood pressure clinic in the Outreach Tent. Remember to stop by the manager's tent to enter the free weekly raffle and tell them you heard about the Farmer's Market on Framingham Patch!

4. Today is the last day to submit an applicaton to volunteer for a Framingham board or committee. Selectmen are expected to appoint on Tuesday, June 19. There are more than 50 openings.
