SLIDESHOW: Scores of Volunteers Place 2,500 Flags at Edgell Grove Cemetery

"I love seeing the Scouts and young volunteers," said Framingham Veterans Agent Peter Harvell.

Despite the rain on Saturday morning, Framingham Veterans Agent Peter Harvell had already distributed more than 2,500 flags for Veterans' graves to more than 65 volunteers. And yet, volunteers still kept arriving.

"This year, despite the postponement and the rain I had more volunteers than usual," said Harvell.

Since 2008, Harvell has enlisted the help of Framingham Girl Scouts and Framingham Boy Scouts to replace the old flags on Veterans' graves with new flags at Edgell Grove Cemetery.

At the other cemeteries, Veterans replace the flags, but the rolling hills at the historic Edgell Grove make it difficult for some of the Veterans, said Harvell.

"I love seeing the Scouts and young volunteers," said Harvell. "It really teaches them about being a part of a community and they learn about history and the Veterans."

Yesterday, Cub, Boy and Girl Scouts volunteered, along with students from McAuliffe Regional Charter School, Marian High and Ashland High School. About a dozen Red Cross volunteers from Ashland High came this year, said Harvell. There were joined by a handful of Veteran volunteers, too.

On Monday morning, Scouts will once again be side-by-side with Veterans for the Town of Framingham's Memorial Day ceremony.
