Editor's Picks: 5 Things To Do Saturday, March 1

Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Loring Arena, Vietnamese restaurant grand opening, Flyers playoff hockey, Wicked's final weekend and break a leg to the Framingham High School Drama Company.

Below are my editor's picks for things to do today, Saturday, March 1

  • Golden Celebration of Edward Loring Arena:  This afternoon,  the Town of Framingham will hold a public celebration to make the 50th anniversary season of the Edward F. Loring Arena, including a free skate, a figure skating exhibition and a police vs fire ice hockey game. All the events are free. The schedule is as follows:

    • Noon to 1:45 p.m. Free public skating. Bring your own skates or rent for a fee.
    • 2 to 2:30 p.m. North Star Figure Skating Club exhibition show
    • 2:40 to 3:50 p.m. Framingham Youth Hockey game, featuring kids under age 8.
    • 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Meet 1960 Olympic gold medal and 1956 Olympic silver medal winner and Framingham resident Rodenhiser, who became Loring's first manager in 1963.
    • 4 to 5 p.m. Framingham Police hockey team vs Framingham Fire hockey team exhibition game. Fans are asked to bring a canned or non-perishable food item for the Pearl Street Cupboard & Cafe.

  • Drama Festival:  Break a leg to the Framingham High School Drama Company, who travel to Tewsksbury High School this morning to compete in the The Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild's annual state drama festival. Framingham High will stage the 1930's depression-era drama The Diviners at 9 a.m. Semifinalists in the festival will be announced tonight. 
  • Playoff Hockey:  The Framingham High School boys hockey team will travel to Gallo Arena on Cape Cod to battle Franklin today at 12:15 in the MIAA Division 1 South playoffs. The Flyers upset the defending Division 1 South champions from Marshfield High earlier this week.
  •  Grand Opening of Framingham's First Vietnamese Restaurant:   Pho Dakao will hold a grand opening at 11 a.m. today. The restaurant will open at 101 Concord St., in the location formerly occupied by Limey's Pub. This is the second location for the family-owned restaurant  To celebrate the grand opening, Pho Dakao will offer 20 percent off it food menu from March 1-7. If you go tell them, you heard about it on Framingham Patch. 
  • Wicked 2014: Spend the afternoon at the Fountain Street Fine Art gallery and catch the final weekend of Wicked 2014, a juried show. The gallery is open today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
