Countdown to the Civil War Encampment

VIDEO: Seniors Knit 2,000 Helmet-Liners for Soliders

Director of Elder Affairs presents postcard from solider thanking seniors at the Callahan Center for the knitted caps to Framingham History Center for its archives.

A small group of women at the Callahan Senior Center knitted 2,000 helmet liners for soliders. Framingham Veteran Agent Peter Harvell collected the knitted caps and got them oversees to soliders. In December, one solider sent a postcard to the Senior Center to thank the ladies - described by Harvell as a modern-day Ladies Auxiliary - for their efforts. Senior Center Director Grace O’Donnell, who was hired as the town's director of Elder Affairs earlier this year, presented the postcard to Framingham History Center Executive Director Anne Murphy. The postcard will become a part of the Center's archives.

Kudos to our wonderful seniors! It's good to know there are those of us who, having the time, use it to take care of the comfort and needs of our nation's protectors. By the way, have you checked out the Callahan Center? What an amazing community - engaged, active, well-run and beautiful. Framingham should be very proud of it's senior population and the facilities and programs it offers them!   more ›

Senior Center, A Fire Station, Trash Collection Listed as Possible Cuts in FY13 Budget

CFO Mary Ellen Kelley said the proposed drastic cuts would only decrease the average taxpayer's current tax bill by about $60.

Drastic cuts could be coming in the 2013 fiscal year budget, if a 0% levy or a 1% under ride were imposed, according to Chief Financial Officer Mary Ellen Kelley. Those cuts could include closing a fire station, closing the recycling center, cutting back solid waste collection to every other week, closing Loring Arena, closing the main library on weekends, closing the branch library, and closing the senior center. This would be in addition to any Framingham Public School administration budget cutbacks. Despite steep reductions in town services, cutting the budget in that way would only decrease the average taxpayer’s current tax bill by about $60, Kelley said. Kelley presented a report to the Selectmen on the preliminary operating budget …

Could not agree with you more Bob, it is foolish to have separate IT groups. And I also agree that asking the superintendent (current or next) to give up $$ and control is foolish. Maybe as part of the superintendent interviews, someone should ask if they'll support a "shared service" IT function.   more ›
