Update on the progress of the trail.
The Cochituate Rail Trail may be open to the public by the end of 2012, according to the Cochituate Rail Trail Committee. The Committee met last week. The Division of Community and Economic Development will be submitting a 25% design plan to MassDOT on Aug. 9. After the design plan submission, a public hearing will be scheduled and designs can be formally created. The design phase could be started and completed in 2012, according to Committee Chair Mark Lamkin, pending no funding or design problems. The Town of Framingham purchased the land for the Cochituate Rail Trail in 2001. The plan went forth by combining the new rail trail and a new sewer system into one project. Framingham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee provided and update on the Cochituate Rail Trail and discussed the need for more pedestrian trails near the town's schools, with buses decreasing.
The Framingham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee wants more pedestrian pathways, especially around the town's schools; and is moving towards the opening of the Cochituate Rail Trail. Framingham has "defunct trails around the schools" according to the Committee. Pathways around the town's elementary and middle Schools are becoming increasingly more important to have with the lack of buses, according to the Committee. One of the first rejuvenating processes will soon start at the former Juniper Hill School property. Also at its July meeting this week, the Committee also discussed issues around the almost completed Cochituate Rail Trail. Playgrounds, sailing and rail trails shared the spotlight at last night's Board of Selectmen meeting.
Recreational issues were the primary topic of discussion during Monday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting. Selectmen voted to support a new playground at an elementary school; help 15 children participate in an adaptive sailing program and back a proposal to create a safe road crossing along the Cochituate Rail Trail. Karen Dempsey, chair of the Framingham Disability Commission, was successful in getting the board to approve a contribution of up to $6,000 for an accessible playground at the Juniper Hill School. The money would come from the handicapped fine account, which is a fund that Town Meeting approved to support programs for persons with disabilities.
