State is looking to close both the Fountain/Winter Street bridge and the Winter Street Bridge near the dam beginning this fall for 6-8 months; Framingham Selectmen told the state to slow down and delayed a vote to approve.
Framingham Selectmen unanimously voted to table approval of a Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) plan to close both the Winter/Fountain street bridge and the Winter Street bridge near the dam at the same time this fall. The bridges would be closed for 6-8 months, minimum, creating a nightmare for motorists. Selectmen said they want to meet with MassDOT representatives to explain their bridge program in detail, before voting to approve the projects. As of yesterday, June 19 the MassDOT has no plans to conduct a meeting about the bridge over the dam but has a public hearing is scheduled for July 26 to talk about the railroad bridge at Winter and Fountain streets. After a 2 month delay, the Fountain Street Bridge was set to open this week; now weather delays have pushed it back to Monday evening, Nov. 21.
The Fountain Street Bridge is expected to open by the end of the day Monday, Nov. 21. The bridge closed on June 23. It was scheduled to re-open at the end of Sepetmber. The opening has been delayed by almost two months. Last week, it was announced the bridge would open on Wednesday. It did not. A safety rail still needs to be installed. Weather delayed its installation this week. "For safety reasons, all work must be completed on the bridge rail prior to the opening of the bridge. The contractor is continuing with this installation and it is anticipate the bridge will be open by the end of the day Monday. Between 5 and 7 p.m. yesterday traffic was backed up to Harvey Cushing Way on both Dudley Road and Winter Street due to the new bridge closure on Fountain Street.
Yesterday, June 23 between 5 and 7 p.m. traffic was backed up to Harvey Cushing Way on both Dudley Road and Winter Street, heading south, due to the new bridge closure on Fountain Street. Tweets and texts indicated that the traffic was just as bad in the other direction, during the morning commuter hours. The bridge, which closed yesterday, is expected to be closed through the end of September.

A Framingham Patch reader wanted to know why some signs in town were covered with trash bags.
Framingham Department of Public Works Capital Program Administrator Paul Gianquitti said the signs are covered for a Massachusetts Department of Transportation project. The project was to have started in May, but was delayed until school got out (today) June 22. "The Fountain Street Bridge will be replaced in it’s entirely. The road will close from June 23 to Sept. 27. The bridge height and alignment will remain the same. Underground utilities including water, sewer force main, and gas that cross the bridge will be replaced. Temporary bypass mains will be used during construction. Motorist should expect detours and delays in South Framingham on Fountain Street and the surrounding roads. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Mass DOT) is scheduled to close the Fountain Street bridge Thursday, June 23 for more than three months. The bridge over the CMX and MBTA railroads was scheduled to be repaired in May, but Mass DOT agreed to delay the project until the day after Framingham Public Schools closed. the last day of school is tomorrow, June 22.
