The Framingham Police Department Color Guard led the short procession, followed by Framingham Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Chaplain Robert Anspach gave a prayer and paid tribute to the "defenders of our freedom." Webelo Scout Nikolai Novak was selected to place the wreath on the monument marking Cushing General Hospital. Between 1944-46 more than 13,800 soliders were cared for on the grounds of the hospital in 95 buildings, built by the U.S. War Department. Later the site became Cushing State Hospital until 1991.

Matt Hugo Earns Eagle Scout Award

Local Eagle Scout Matt Hugo constructed and installed birdhouses in elderly communities around town to bring residents company and a lesson about the environment they live in.

Hoping to “spice things up” at several local nursing home communities, Matt Hugo of Framingham built and installed over 20 birdhouses outside these homes as part of his Eagle Scout project. As he attracted birds, Hugo said he wanted to make life for the elderly more exciting and teach the residents the importance of local wildlife. The birdhouses will attract chickadees, the Massachusetts state bird, and small woodpeckers. Hugo, with help of 16 other scouts and friends, learned the art of woodworking as they constructed each birdhouse. They installed seven birdhouses in each nursing home community, he said. The project gave other Scouts the opportunity to earn their own woodworking merit badges. Directly involved in each step of the …

Reaching All 50 States To Strive for Eagle Scout [VIDEO]

Students at three of Framingham's elementary schools have new maps of the United States on their playgrounds thanks to an Eagle Scout Project by a Framingham High sophomore.

As a child Matthew Crone attended McCarthy Elementary School. Today, the students at his former elementary school can learn the 50 states while at recess thanks to the high school sophomore's Eagle Scout project. And so can students at Hemenway Elementary and Wilson Elementary. A member of Framingham Troop 21, Liberty District, Knox Trail Council, Crone proposed painting maps of the United States on each of the three elementary school's playgrounds to earn Eagle Scout. He made presentations to each of the schools, and received approval to paint on the playgrounds. He secured funding for the giant stencils and the paint from the Verizon Pioneer Foundation. The first map was completed at Wilson Elementary on April 7. McCarthy was next on …

And then to have your father time lapse photograph it, is this great or what. Congratulations, its was good to read something positive about our teenagers for a change. Cub Scout Pack 78 held its Pinewood Derby this month.

Cub Scout Pack 78 could be called the speed demons of North Framingham. Fourty-two Scouts took their block of wood, plastic wheels and turned them into machines of kinetic energy for speed. The room was filled with the energy of the Scouts cheering on each other and fans sporting signs. The Pinewood Derby is a month-long activity: you pick a great design, build the car, tune it to the 32-foot track and run for the gold. The designs made by the kids are always eye opening: The racing this year was intense. We are so thankful to the residents of Framingham that purchased popcorn from us so we could update our electronic timer and software. Based on each Scout running down the track four times, the system calculated the time for each heat …

Your welcome. I love the idea of how the Veterans included the Scouts in the ceremonies and also the students from Walsh Middle school (whom Patch will have coverage of their poetry readings tomorrow.) It's great for the youth to meet these Veterans and to see and understand what the day is all about first-hand.   more ›
