5 Things You Need To Know Today: May 3

Framingham Town Meeting approves raises and increased salaries for some employees, 10 new firefighters sworn in, Civil War performances Saturday and more featured in today's column.

Our daily column, 5 Things You Need to Know Today, will help you to get your day started and offer you some fodder for water cooler conversation. 1. Framingham Community Theatre will stage two performances of Our Civil War Story: From the Home Front to the Front Lines Saturday, May 4. The original production will take place tomorrow at 2:30 and 8 p.m. at Village Hall. "Our Civil War Story" uses actual writings from residents of Framingham and New England to give the audience a sense of what YOUR life would have been like had you lived here 150 years ago. The words of over 40 real people will be read by 30 local actors and re-enactors, bringing these voices of the past alive in a powerful performance featuring a live Civil War Camp Band. …

Pakistani Officials Spend Morning Learning About Framingham History

Three Pakistani officials spent Monday morning with the Framingham History Center, as part of a week-long program to learn more about the Town of Framingham.

Three Pakistani officials spent Monday morning with the Framingham History Center. Framingham History Center Director Annie Murphy said the three woman toured Village Hall, Framingham's first town hall, received a guided tour of Framingham's history from Town Historian Fred Wallace, and visited the Center's exhibit on the history of Shoppers World on Monday morning. Monday afternoon a reception and luncheon was held for the three woman at the Memorial Building. Food was provided by Punjabi Grill. Afterwards, the three women spend some time at the Framingham Library. Framingham Patch will have more on the visit of the three officials from Pakistan all week.

History Center Holding a 50s-style Sock Hop Friday

Twist the night away tomorrow, April 5 from 7-9 at Village Hall.

Don your poodle skirts and saddle shoes ('50s dress optional) and dance like they did on American Bandstand as the Framingham History Center will host a Sock Hop Friday night, April 5 at Vlillage Hall from 7 to 9. DJs Dave and Jeanne Bowman will be spinning the "45s" with doo-wop dance tunes and ballads that remain popular to this day!  Try out or show off some dance styles of the era - like the twist, jitterbug, cha-cha, and lindy hop. There will be prizes awarded in a number of categories, including most authentic outfit and best dancers! Refreshments and hula-hooping too!    Families are encouraged to attend. Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins Return to Shoppers World

John Harvard's Brew House has created a Blueberry Muffin Beer and a Jordan Marsh-style Blueberry Muffin dessert, in which a part of the proceeds will benefit the Framingham History Center.

Blueberries are not only good for you, they are good for the Framingham History Center, too. John Harvard's Brew House created a series of breakfast brews, including a blueberry muffin beer this month. Tonight, the blueberry muffin beer ($6 a pint) will be re-named Shoppers Ale. And for every pint of the amber ale with hints of blueberry and cinnamon sold, $1 will go to the Framingham History Center. John Harvard's is also unveiling a Jordan Marsh-style blueberry muffin dessert ($5.99), of which $1 also will go to the Framingham History Center. SLIDE SHOW: Swanky '50s Party To Unveil Shoppers World Exhibit

Framingham History Center's newest exhibit Shoppers World 1951-1994 will be open this week on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

More than 200 people attended the preview opening of Framingham History Center's newest exhibit Shoppers World 1951-1994. Friday night at Edgell Memorial Library. The highlight of Friday's members only party was when Framingham Selectman Chair Charlie Sisitsky helped light up the old neon sign that stood high above Shoppers World. The exhibit will be open this school vacation week Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 adult, free for members and children. The exhibition features images, merchandise, and memorabilia that will be sure to bring you back to this “kinder, gentler shopping center," states the Framingham History Center's web site. VIDEO: Shoppers World Lights Up Framingham Again

Framingham Selectman Chair Charlie Sisitsky helped light up the the newest exhibit at the Framingham History Center: Shoppers World 1951-1994 Friday night.

More than 200 people attended the preview opening of Framingham History Center's newest exhibit Shoppers World 1951-1994. Friday night at Edgell Memorial Library. The highlight of the event was when Framingham Selectman Chair Charlie Sisitsky helped light up the old neon sign that stood high above Shoppers World. The sign had been stored in the basement of the History Center, since 1999; but for this special exhibit Malden's Dave Waller, a special effects specialist, and Natick's Jeff Crosby, an electrician, helped restore the sign for Friday night's festivities. But developers want to tear down and put in it's place anything to turn a profit. The Framingham History Center, held an old fashioned caroling session featuring the Voices of MetroWest at Historic Village Hall Sunday afternoon.

The Framingham History Center, held an old fashioned caroling session featuring the Voices of MetroWest at Historic Village Hall Sunday afternoon. Voices of MetroWest, a multi-generational community choir, had a jolly time leading the large crowd in a holiday sing-a-long. This was the first time the history center has held this holiday event. Families were encouraged to attend. Several said this was the first time they had stepped foot in Village Hall. At the event, children could craft a photo ornament, sip hot cocoa and cookies and of course, spend some time with Santa!                     .

According to the National Flag Day Foundation today in 1885  Bernard J. Cigrand, a teacher, just 19 years old, at Stony Hill School, placed a 10-inch, 38-star flag in a bottle on his desk then assigned essays on the flag and its significance. His observance, commemorated Congress' adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson  issued a proclamation calling for a nation-wide observance of Flag Day. And in 1949, President Harry Truman signed an Act Of Congress designating the 14th day of June every year …
