Class Size to Increase; 2 Kindergarten Classes Created at Juniper Hill

Framingham School Administration: "Accommodating between 760-800 kindergarten children for the third year in a row has required some creativity and flexibility, but we are pleased to report every kindergarten student has an assignment for September."

To deal with 800 kindergarten students in the fall, Framingham Public Schools plans to override the Framingham School Committee recommended class size policy for kindergarten students of 19-22 students and place 23 kindergarten students in each classroom for the Class of 2026. And even with the increase of one student per class, the school district doesn't have enough classroom space in its 8 elementary schools and has made the decision to house two kindergarten classes at the former Juniper Hill Elementary School, now B.L.O.C.K.S Preschool. Kindergarten students at the former Juniper Hill will follow the same schedule as McCarthy Elementary School students 8:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. The students, as first graders, then will be transferred to …

Why can't some of these students be placed at Brophy or Woodrow Wilson? And why are these schools not filling? Is it just the horrible test scores? Of the 70 students who were placed on waiting lists, how many came from these two districts? And of those 70 what number school did they get? I know of many Brophy area residents who placed Brophy as #6 and received that school. Something needs to be …   more ›

Hi Rich, Framingham's rental percentages have gone from 48% six years ago to over 53% according to town officials. We have a lot of older houses that have been split from one family homes to multi-family homes and many condominumiums have been scooped up by investors instead of owners. Full day kindergarten hasn't brought this many new people into the community. This is the first year that we've …   more ›

Framingham Mom On Talking to Son About Bombings

Framingham Patch blogger Samantha McGarry blogs about having to tell her son, 8, about the Boston bombings before a planned Open Circle at school on Monday.

Framingham mom and Framingham Patch blogger Samantha McGarry wrote on Huffington Post about having to tell her son, 8, about the Boston bombings before a planned Open Circle at school on Monday. "... at some point today, I have to sit him down and have a conversation I don't want to have to have. One that will bring back memories of another conversation we had to have just over four months ago. One that upset him then and which will upset him now. One to which, when he asks why, we will not have the answers. I guess this is parenting. I guess this is real life. It stinks. Yesterday, we received notification from our kids' school principal that they plan to hold Open Circles in class on Monday so the children can share any questions, …
