Sunday, 15 teams from three elementary school participated in the 2013 Robot Maze Challenge, sponsored by the Framingham Education Foundation, at Fuller Middle School.
The challenge is to program a robot through a maze in the fastest time possible. It's not as easy as it seems. But Sunday afternoon, 15 teams from three elementary schools took up the challenge in the 2013 Robot Maze Challenge, sponsored by the Framingham Education Foundation. Working in small groups, students from Barbieri Elementary School, Dunning Elementary School and Potter Road Elementary School had three tries to get their robot through the maze, which includes road blocks, a car wash-like drive-thru and a golf ball quest. The students used a computer program and trial-and-error to complete the maze challenge. Teams earned points by finishing different parts of the maze, but also strived for the fastest time through the maze too. …

The organized protest purposely coincided with an assembly in which teen boys were asked to pledge not to commit violence against women.
Framingham High teens this morning protested against what they say was a lack of response to two sexual assaults at the high school. The teenagers said they are upset by the lack of response by many adults - school, police and the district attorney's office - to two sexual assaults that they and at least one school employee say happened at Framingham High last spring. The assaults were allegedly perpetrated by the same male athlete against two different female students inside the school. "It is time to expose what has been hidden for too long," said senior Jessica Krueger. "I can't allow the school to keep hiding these incidents." Nearly 20 students scheduled their protest at the same time as Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone was …

Artwork, created by students, is on display at the main Framingham Library, as part of National Youth Art Month.
March is National Youth Art Month. And throughout March, scores of Framingham Public School students have their artwork on display at the main Framingham Library. The art is displayed in the lobby and in the Costin Room. The public may view during normal operating hours. Just in case, you are unable to see the art exhibit, Framingham Patch snapped a few dozen photos for this slideshow. Earlier this month, a reception was held for the artists and their families at the main Framingham Library. Patch heard that Superintendent of Schools Stacy Scott attended and played the drums. *** If you have photos from the reception, please feel free to add them to this slideshow.

Framingham Public Schools have started a search to hire an elementary and a middle school principal by the end of April.
Wilson Elementary School Principal Robin Welch will retire at the end of the school year. Earlier in the school year, Fuller Middle School principal Juan Rodriguez announced he would retire at the end of the school year, too. Framingham Public Schools is in the process of searching for a new principal for both schools. Superintendent of Schools Stacy Scott said he hopes to name replacements by the April break. In 1999, Welch was named principal of Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. In 2005, Welch was named the Thomas C. Passios Outstanding Principal of the Year. Welch started his education career as a classroom teacher in Brookline in 1977. In 1987, he became Vice Principal of the John D. Runkle Elementary School in Brookline. He served as …

Proposed Framingham Schools calendar reduces early release days at elementary level, increase early release days at middle school level, creates 2 night time parent-teacher conferences and schedules the first day of school on August 28.
Framingham Public School students may get four weeks of vacation next year instead of three, with the proposed 2013-14 school calendar. The calendar is still in draft form and will need a vote by the Framingham School Committee before it is finalized. With Christmas 2013 falling on a Wednesday, Framingham Educational Operations Director Sonia Diaz suggested schools close on Friday, Dec. 20 and not re-open until Monday, Jan. 6 2014, a 2-week break. School Committee member Beverly Hugo favored the two-week break saying it would allow for "incredible family time." School Committee member Michael Bower said closing the schools for that two-week period, in the heart of winter, could help the school district save money in fuel costs. The …

You Ask, Patch Answers.
The last of school - as of now - is Wednesday, June 26. "We are still within the number of allotted snow days. We have two days before we hit the end of June," said Framingham Superintendent of Schools Stacy Scott Tuesday night to the Framingham School Committee. "I predict there will be no more snow days," said Scott jokingly. He then added he was certain there would be no more than 2 additional snow days. School was cancelled Tuesday, as Framingham received 8.4 inches of snow. Today is the first day of spring, but weather forecasters are predicting snowflakes Thursday and colder than normal temperatures for the rest of the week. Framingham has had a total of six snow days. The Framingham School Committee voted last spring, that it might …

Delayed openings at town building, trash collection update, schools closed and cancellations and postponed events all featured in today's storm central edition of our 5 Things column.
Our daily column, 5 Things You Need to Know Today, will help you to get your day started and offer you some fodder for water cooler conversation. 1. There is NO school for Framingham public school students, as well as Marian High, McAuliffe Charter and St. Bridget School students. As Framingham Public Schools are cancelled, so are all activities at the schools for students. On Monday afternoon, Framingham public schools announced a two-hour delayed opening for Tuesday, but by 11 p.m. had abandoned that idea for the sixth snow day of the year. Framingham High principal Michael Welch said the 2-hour delayed opening would have been a first for the district in more than 20 years. Many believe it would have been the first-ever for the public …

From the FPS: " Due to the expected storm, there will be a two-hour delay of the opening of all our schools. There will be no preschool, no before school programs and no breakfast. Lunch will be served. ... Teachers, aides (including kindergarten teachers and aides), tutors, and paraprofessionals will report no more than two hours later than usual. Students being driven to school must follow the two-hour delay …
