Due to the expected winter storm on Tuesday, the state announced that the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25.
Since much of Massachusetts is expecting a winter storm on Tuesday, and with it the possibility of numerous school closings or delayed openings, the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced on its website. Originally this composition test was scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, but in an effort to make sure all schools administer the test on the same day, "all schools must administer the ELA Composition test to students in grades 4, 7, and 10 on Monday, March 25, including schools that are not affected by the weather," according to a memo from Elizabeth Davis, Associate Commissioner of …

"When I found out this was the reason for the ‘Level 3’ designation, I was livid," said Framingham High School Principal Michael Welch.
Framingham High School appealed its Level 3 ranking by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), which it believed was an error, and won its appeal; and will be categorized as a Level 2 school. The high school was given a level 3 rating, which school leaders described as a technicality, based on “extremely low level of participation by ELL (English Language Learner) students on the spring 2012 MCAS ELA (English Language Arts) exam." "I was shocked by this, as our results were spectacular and I was sure this was a mistake," High School Principal Michael Welch told parents in his weekly newsletter. The state, if a school has a participation rate in any category below 90%, they are automatically categorized …

Framingham Public Schools issues press release on the MCAS results for the district. Massachusetts DESE has released its accountability rankings for schools this year. Rankings this year are based on a new formula for calculating school performance. This formula takes into account the progress of students as well as overall achievement for the school and each subgroup measured. At the high school level, participation in MCAS, drop out and graduation rates are also important to the formula. Overall, Framingham continues to be challenged at reaching the desired levels of progress and achievement for our students but we remain committed to highlighting our areas of excellence and areas needing continued improvement. Two schools in Framingham…

MCAS starts up in a couple of weeks, but do you really know the details? Read on for a quick brush-up and ways to prepare your child.
I’ve been hearing about the MCAS for years, but honestly knew few actual details about it. As a parent of two third graders about to embark on taking the test, I thought it was high time to research it. As my college professors always told us, “if one of you has a question, it means at least one other person in the class has the same question so ask!” I did research and here’s what I found: MCAS stands for Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System. According to the Department of Education Web site, the MCAS is designed to meet the requirements of the Education Reform Law of 1993. This law specifies that the testing program must: As required by the Education Reform Law, students must pass the 10th grade tests in English Language Arts…
