Governor Deval Patrick announced Tuesday he has appointed Marian T. Ryan as Middlesex County District Attorney (DA), according to a press release issued by the Governor's office. Ryan, who currently serves as the Middlesex DA's general counsel, will assume the responsibilities for the Middlesex County DA's Office as DA Gerald Leone recently stepped down from his post to join a private law firm. A 30-year veteran of the Middlesex County DA's office, Ryan has served as general counsel and chief of the office's elder and disabled unit, the press release said. Leone will join the law firm of Nixon Peabody on April 29.
Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone is stepping down from his office to join the law firm of Nixon Peabody, the same firm former Sen. Scott Brown earlier this month said he was joining. An announcement from Nixon Peabody says Leone will join the firm as a partner in the government investigations and white collar defense practice beginning April 29. A woman at the Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed the news, but did not have further details. Leone was first elected as Middlesex district attorney in 2006, and his current term in office was up in 2014. He previously stated he would not run for reelection at the end of his term. Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone has announced he will not seek a third term in 2014, according to his office. Leone made the announcement during an awards ceremony with his staff on Jan. 10 “These decisions are, and should be, predicated upon what is best for the person and their family. What is best for me and my family is that I not seek another term. As someone who is much smarter than I am once said, ‘I must be willing to give up what I am, in order to become what I will be.’ Other than a husband and father, I am not yet sure what that will be when I am no longer a district attorney,” Leone said in a statement. A Framingham man was arraigned Monday on animal abuse charges after allegedly killing his dog and disposing of it in a Dumpster, said Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone. Douglas A. Coelho, 27, Beaver Street, Framingham, was arrested Friday night by Framingham Police. “This defendant is alleged to have inflicted extreme cruelty to a helpless animal by striking his own dog, torturing and killing the dog, and then disposing of her in a Dumpster,” Leone said in a press release. “This behavior demonstrates a disturbing and very concerning disregard for life.” Framingham District Court Judge Douglas Stoddart ordered the defendant held on $20,000 cash bail with the condition that he have no contact with domesticated animals. WOBURN – A Marlborough man has been found guilty for the 2009 murder of a 17-year-old that occurred in Callahan State Park in Framingham, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone said in a press release today. Marquise Brown, 20, was found guilty by a Middlesex jury on a charge of first degree murder following a seven-day trial in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn. Brooke Uttley, 22, indicted in on charges of vehicular homicide in the December 2011 death of Ashley Donahue, 20; both were students at Framingham State University.
Brooke Uttley, 22, of Haverhill, was indicted by a Middlesex County grand jury on charges of motor vehicle homicide, operating to endanger, and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury. An arraignment date has not yet been set. According to authorities, on December 3, 2011, at approximately 2:20 am, Ashland Police and Framingham Police responded to 3 Badger Road for reports of a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, investigators observed a Honda Civic facing the north bound direction with significant damage. Jeremy Gardner, 30, of Bridgton, Maine, pled guilty yesterday, March 26 in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn to charges of motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of an accident after causing a death, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in property damage, and operating under the influence, second offense. Today, Middlesex Superior Court Judge Sandra Hamlin sentenced the defendant to eight years and one day in state prison on the felony motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident after causing a death charges.
