Jason Smith To Be Awarded the 2012 Framingham Good Scout Award

The Good Scout Award is bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated integrity and genuine concern for others in both their professional and personal lives.

For his involvment with youth in Framingham, Knox Trail Council Boy Scouts of America will award Jason Smith of Framingham with the 2012 Framingham Good Scout Award later this month. The Good Scout Award is bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated integrity and genuine concern for others in both their professional and personal lives. The recipients need not have been Scouts but must carry the “Spirit of Scouting” into their adult lives.  Smith has been very involved in with youth sports teams in Framingham including baseball, football and basketball. As a coach, he has served as a role model to many Framingham youth over the years. Smith has served on the Framingham Board of Selectman since 2006.  He is a past mentor of the John …

Sen. Spilka Named Legislator of Year by Biotech industry Organization

Yesterday, June 18 State Sen. Karen Spilka was recognized by the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) as one of its state legislators of the year at the 2012 BIO International Convention at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. The Massachusetts Biotechnology Council and local life science leaders nominated Spilka for the award and she was selected as a recipient by a vote of organization's state government relations committee. Spilka, who serves as the Senate Chair of the BioTech Legislative Caucus, was recognized for her dedicated work to advance the biotechnology industry, her support of the issues important to the industry and her efforts to attract and retain life science companies in Massachusetts. Popular Nursery School Director Retires

Framingham Centre Nursery School Director Kay Byram has retired after 15 years; the school established a scholarship in her name for its Ready, Set, Go Kindergarten Summer class.

Kay Byram the Executive Director of Framingham Centre Nursery School has retired after 15 years. Over her tenure at the school, she touched so many families' lives. Her commitment and dedication to Framingham Centre has played an important role in the success of this organization. Her willingness to go beyond her expected duties and to always be there for the families in their time of need made her an invaluable asset to the school. Her experience and expertise will be greatly missed. She joined the nursery school in 1997 and continued to grow and enhance a program that was first established in 1963. Reaching All 50 States To Strive for Eagle Scout [VIDEO]

Students at three of Framingham's elementary schools have new maps of the United States on their playgrounds thanks to an Eagle Scout Project by a Framingham High sophomore.

As a child Matthew Crone attended McCarthy Elementary School. Today, the students at his former elementary school can learn the 50 states while at recess thanks to the high school sophomore's Eagle Scout project. And so can students at Hemenway Elementary and Wilson Elementary. A member of Framingham Troop 21, Liberty District, Knox Trail Council, Crone proposed painting maps of the United States on each of the three elementary school's playgrounds to earn Eagle Scout. He made presentations to each of the schools, and received approval to paint on the playgrounds. He secured funding for the giant stencils and the paint from the Verizon Pioneer Foundation. Young, Old Accomplishments Honored at Framingham State Commencement

Framingham State President Timothy J. Flanagan presented a special service award to Edith Brown, who works as a cashier in Framingham State’s dining commons. Brown celebrated her 25th anniversary working at FSU, as well as her 90th birthday.

Several of the state’s leaders in the fight to end hunger and improve adolescent nutrition urged the Framingham State Class of 2012 to use their talents to help others, during two commencement ceremonies yesterday, May 20. “Do for others in whatever way fits you best,” said undergraduate commencement speaker Catherine D’Amato, the president and CEO of the Greater Boston Food Bank. “Give your time, give your money, give your talent. No gift is too small.” The theme of this year’s commencement was “Food, Hunger and Nutrition.” Thousands of family members and friends watched as a total of 1,252 degrees were conferred during two ceremonies on a beautiful Sunday. State Senator Karen Spilka recommended Framingham resident Stephanie Mercandetti for this recognition for her outstanding contributions to Framingham and Walpole.

Wednesday, May 16 Framingham resident and newly-elected Framingham  Planning Board member Stephanie Mercandetti was honored as a member of the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women’s 2012 class of Unsung Heroines.
