As debate schedules are set and signatures are collected, campaigns are in full swing.
It was another busy week in the race for U.S. Senate last week as we start counting down the weeks to the April 30 Primary. As of Wednesday, two Democrats and three Republicans filed the required number of signatures to run in the special election for U.S. Senate. On the Democrat side we have U.S. Reps. Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch. So far for Republicans, it’s former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan, former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and State Rep. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk). All five submitted more than the required number of signatures to the Secretary of State’s office to appear on the April 30 Primary ballot. Two Democrats, including Framingham's Congressman, and three Republicans submitted the needed 10,000 names.
Two Democrats and three Republicans submitted the required number of signatures to run in the special election for U.S. Senate, according to the Boston Globe. U.S. Reps. Edward Markey (D-Malden) and Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) each filed more than double the 10,000 certified signatures required. Markey, who represents Framingham, led the way with nearly 34,000 signatures, while Lynch had just over 25,000. On the Republican side, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan filed nearly 19,000 signatures, followed by former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset at almost 17,000 and state Rep. Framingham's Congressman wrote a letter to Stop & Shop's Chief Operating Officer to seek a resolution "consistent with the company’s strong reputation as a labor-friendly workplace.”
Framingham Congressman Ed Markey (D-Mass.) Wednesday expressed concern over the grocery chain Stop & Shop’s reported hiring of replacement workers, and at a higher wage than unionized workers, in the company’s ongoing negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement with Stop & Shop employees and the United Food & Commercial Workers. In a letter sent to Stop & Shop COO James McCann, Rep. The U.S. Postal Service on Wednesday proposed ending first-class mail delivery on Saturdays, beginning in August.
In the coming weeks, Congressmen Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch will likely try to distance themselves as they seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. But on Wednesday, both men spoke out about the U.S. Postal Service’s proposal to cut first-class mail delivery on Saturday. The plan calls to end regular mail service on Saturdays, while maintaining Saturday delivery for packages and express mail. While Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) isn’t expected to make a formal announcement until later this afternoon, a new Stephen Lynch for Senate Facebook page popped up this morning with a link to a “Stephen Lynch for US Senate Announcement” YouTube video that announces Lynch’s Senate candidacy. Kerry will replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.
With only three dissenting votes, the U.S. Senate has confirmed John Kerry as the new Secretary of State. Kerry will take over for Hillary Clinton, who is leaving her post after four years. The move means Kerry will have to resign as a senator soon paving the way for a special senate election. The primary election is scheduled for April 30 and the general election will be held on June 25. U.S. Congressman Ed Markey, D-MA, has announced he is running for the seat. U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch, D-MA has hinted that he may run. As for an interim senator for Kerry's seat, Gov. Deval Patrick plans to announce his pick on Wednesday, Jan. 30, according to the Boston Herald.

U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch, D-MA, plans to announce he will run for the seat John Kerry is expected to vacate if he confirmed as Secretary of State, according to the Boston Globe. A source told the Globe that Lynch will challenge Congressman Ed Markey, D-Malden for the Democratic primary nomination. Markey recently announced he was running for the seat. Sen. John Kerry’s confirmation hearing to become the next Secretary of State will take place on Jan. 24, according to Fox25. No opposition is expected to Kerry’s nomination. If he is named to the new post, a special election will be held 145 to 160 days after the confirmation and an interim senator will be named to serve until the election. The front runner to replace Kerry is Congressman Edward Markey. A number of Democratic leaders have already voiced their support of Markey. Congressman Michael Capuano announced earlier this week that he will not run for the seat and Congressman Stephen Lynch is still mulling the possibility. On the Republican side, former Sen.
