Heightened Demand for Heating Assistance

Bitterly cold temperatures this winter have created heightened demand for the Salvation Army heating assistance program. Donors are being asked to help contribute to the "Good Neighbor Energy Fund."

Editor's Note: The following information was provided on behalf of the Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund. The Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund is appealing to state residents to consider a donation to the Fund's 2012-'13 “Give the Gift of Warmth” campaign. The fund’s administrator, The Salvation Army, is seeing a heightened “urgency of need” due to the recent bitter cold temperatures, an economy that has been slow to recover and the relatively high costs of living. At the same time, the fund has taken in fewer dollars than at this point last year. The "Good Neighbor Fund" is now open for applicants who need help paying their fuel bills.

The Salvation Army provides up to $350 for eligible households in Massachusetts during the winter from money raised in its "Give the Gift of Warmth" campaign.

The holidays can be hectic, but if you have a couple of hours to give these places could use your help.

During the holidays is when these local organizations could use some of your time, too.  1. Salvation Army: To maintain the supply the center is currently soliciting food donations. Dedicated to providing local assistance to youth and adults in the form of worship, bible study, character building programs and a well-stocked food pantry.  2. United Way of Tri-County: The goal of the United Way's Volunteer Center is to generate resources to build a stronger community and improve lives. Volunteers are needed for many projects. 3. Art, Beer & Wings Benefit for Tornado Victims

Fountain Street Fine Art gallery owners are holding a fundraiser Saturday night, July 30 to benefit victims of the June 1 Tornado. Tickets are still available.

"Over the past few months as we've worked to make this gallery happen, we've been lucky enough to have support and assistance from all of you - our families, neighbors, friends old and new, and in some cases, from complete strangers," said Fountain Street Fine Art gallery owners Marie Craig and Cherie Clinton. "As a way of giving back, Craig and Clinton are hold Art, Beer & Wings, a fundraiser to held those affected by the tornadoes in Western Massachusetts. The Salvation Army will be operating its store and serving meals in downtown Framingham for the summer.

Whether the Salvation Army continues its presence in downtown Framingham and for how long appears to be an open issue. Tuesday night, the Board of Selectmen reluctantly extended the Salvation Army’s business license to August with the proviso that there will not be any further extensions. “I’ll support an extension to August, but not beyond August,” said Selectman Dennis Giombetti, who indicated the Salvation Army needs to develop a plan that will address when the organization leaves downtown and sets up shop on Route 9. Discussions with the Salvation Army to vacate all or part of the building it occupies in the center of town began in 2010. Organizations Want To Help Families Facing Challenges

Local organizations like the Salvation Army, the United Way of Tri-County and Toys for Tots are struggling to help an overwhelming number of families this season.

Churches, social service organizations, businesses and individuals are struggling to help an overwhelming number of families and individuals who need food, as well as help in providing any semblance of Christmas for their children this year. The Framingham Salvation Army Corps is a source of help for many Greater Framingham residents.  The Salvation Army is both a protestant church and a social service agency, giving the officers ( clergy ) a unique perspective. The Framingham Corps officers, Envoys Ruth and Warren Blais  are working countless hours to meet people in the community, while providing desperately needed help, and raising funds at the same time.
