With Tuesday's official nomination of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in the U.S. Senate. But before that even happens, an interim senator has to be named. On Wednesday, Gov. Deval Patrick announced his former chief of staff William “Mo” Cowan will be the interim senator and will serve until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Patch reported in December that Cowan, a Stoughton resident, would be stepping down and returning to the private sector. A special election would be held 145 to 160 days after confirmation.
Sen. John Kerry’s confirmation hearing to become the next Secretary of State will take place on Jan. 24, according to Fox25. No opposition is expected to Kerry’s nomination. If he is named to the new post, a special election will be held 145 to 160 days after the confirmation and an interim senator will be named to serve until the election. The front runner to replace Kerry is Congressman Edward Markey. A number of Democratic leaders have already voiced their support of Markey. Congressman Michael Capuano announced earlier this week that he will not run for the seat and Congressman Stephen Lynch is still mulling the possibility. On the Republican side, former Sen. Scott Brown has not announced whether he is going to run.

The Massachusetts senator is the president's pick to replace Hillary Clinton as the country's top diplomat.
John Kerry is President Obama's pick to become the next Secretary of State, and replace Hillary Clinton as the nation's top diplomat. Many expected Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to be the president's pick after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice took her name out of the running last week. Rice had been under scrutiny by Republicans in Congress for statements she made in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The scramble to replace Kerry is already on; a poll done for WBUR showed yesterday that Republican Scott Brown would lead if the special election to replace Kerry were held today.

Congressman Ed Markey, who represents Framingham, told reporters he was "seriously considering" a run for Senate, should Sen. John Kerry be tapped as President Barack Obama's nominee for secretary of state. Markey, who has an office in Framingham, made the remarks to reporters at Malden City Hall, following a press conference regarding the city's proposed minor league baseball park. President Obama plans to nominate U.S. Senator John Kerry for Secretary of State, according to ABC News. Kerry, if nominaed by Obama and confirmed by the Senate, would replace outgoing Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. President Obama said today that U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice had withdrawn from consideration to be the next Secretary of State, saying conservative opposition would make her candidacy too "disruptive."
