John Kerry, who was just approved as the next Secretary of State, stopped by the Middlesex County District Attorney's office Thursday, his former place of employment.
The Middlesex District Attorney's office had a special guest on Thursday. Middlesex DA Gerry Leone welcomed John Kerry, who on Tuesday was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next Secretary of State. Kerry was a senator for Massachusetts from 1985 until his resignation to take up his new position earlier this week. The stop was part of a tour Kerry is taking around the state as he prepares to take on his new responsibilities. His choice to stop by the Middlesex District Attorney's office was also a chance to catch up on an old place of employment. Kerry will replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.
With only three dissenting votes, the U.S. Senate has confirmed John Kerry as the new Secretary of State. Kerry will take over for Hillary Clinton, who is leaving her post after four years. The move means Kerry will have to resign as a senator soon paving the way for a special senate election. The primary election is scheduled for April 30 and the general election will be held on June 25. U.S. Congressman Ed Markey, D-MA, has announced he is running for the seat. U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch, D-MA has hinted that he may run. As for an interim senator for Kerry's seat, Gov. Deval Patrick plans to announce his pick on Wednesday, Jan. 30, according to the Boston Herald.
Nomination papers for candidate will be available soon.

U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch, D-MA, plans to announce he will run for the seat John Kerry is expected to vacate if he confirmed as Secretary of State, according to the Boston Globe. A source told the Globe that Lynch will challenge Congressman Ed Markey, D-Malden for the Democratic primary nomination. Markey recently announced he was running for the seat. Lynch plans to formally announce his plans after Kerry’s expected confirmation. Sen. John Kerry’s confirmation hearing to become the next Secretary of State will take place on Jan. 24, according to Fox25. No opposition is expected to Kerry’s nomination. If he is named to the new post, a special election will be held 145 to 160 days after the confirmation and an interim senator will be named to serve until the election. The front runner to replace Kerry is Congressman Edward Markey. A number of Democratic leaders have already voiced their support of Markey. Congressman Michael Capuano announced earlier this week that he will not run for the seat and Congressman Stephen Lynch is still mulling the possibility. On the Republican side, former Sen. Frank reportedly wants to stay to be part of the 'fiscal cliff' debate.
One day after leaving the U.S. Congress, former Democratic Congressman Barney Frank said he asked Gov. Deval Patrick to appoint him as the interim senator to fill John Kerry's seat. Frank made the remarks during an appearance on MSNBC this morning, Jan. 4. If appointed, Frank would fill the seat Kerry will likely vacate if he is confirmed as the next Secretary of State. John Kerry is President Obama's pick to become the next Secretary of State, and replace Hillary Clinton as the nation's top diplomat. Many expected Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to be the president's pick after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice took her name out of the running last week. Rice had been under scrutiny by Republicans in Congress for statements she made in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The scramble to replace Kerry is already on; a poll done for WBUR showed yesterday that Republican Scott Brown would lead if the special election to replace Kerry were held today.
