Staples President and Chief Operating Officer Michael Miles will resign effective Feb. 2, 2013. “The Board and I thank Mike for his leadership and service over the past decade,” said Ron Sargent, Staples’ chairman and chief executive officer. “Mike brought new energy to our brand, drove growth in our services business, and restructured and integrated our international operations. Local tennis players will come together tonight to raise funds for one of their own who was injured in a crash in Marborough.
Local tennis players are coming together tonight (Nov. 30) during a fundraiser for Mike Mashkevich, a Staples employee, who was severely injured in an Marlborough crash that sent three to the hospital. “I think the tennis community is really rallying around him and doing everything they can," said Steve Winer, director of Tennis at the Wayside Racquet & Swim Club who explained Mike is making strides in his recovery after recently coming out of a coma. "He is in the right place medically. We are trying to do what we can as a club." Mike is a United States Tennis Association 5.0 rated player of Central Mass League who plays in the Men's A League from Wayside Racquet & Swim Club. Those that survive an intense car crash can face months of rehabilitation towards a life that will be much different than the one they used to lead. “(Mike) is getting better every day but he is quite confused sometimes," said his girlfriend Nela Rudicka, explaining that it will be six to twelve months before his true mental state is known. “We are not sure how he is going to be or how much he remembers." An October car accident that resulted in a Marlborough man — who has since been in a coma — being life flighted has pushed a family friend to action.
It was an accident that sent three to the hospital, with Mike Mashkevich making the trip by helicopter to UMass Worcester, where he is in a coma recovering. “He is making progress to getting better but he has so many broken bones," said Jessie Seiders who described Mike as her best friend and who has started a fundraising effort to help the family. "He just started opening his eyes.” Mike was sitting in the front passenger seat and took the brunt of the accident, she said. The driver and rear seat passenger — who fractured his legs — have been released from the hospital, said Seiders. Mike is 24 and living in Marlborough. According to a report on Boston.com listing the highest paid CEOs in Massachusetts, Framingham-based TJX Corp and Staples both have their CEOs in the top 20. TJX Corp CEO Carol Meyrowitz was #12 on the list. In 2011 she made $11 million, but in 2010 she earned $23 million. "The decline of nearly $12 million in the most recent filing was due to significantly smaller stock and option awards, according to documents filed by the Framingham retail discounter with securities regulators. Framingham-based Staples will close 30 of its North American stores to try and boost revenue. The company didn't say which stores would be shuttered. It employs 88,000 workers worldwide. In a news release, Staples said it wants to concentrate on its online retail operation. Staples is the largest office supplier in the United States. Youth mentoring advocates across Massachusetts, including representatives from 31 mentoring programs throughout the state, gathered to celebrate and highlight the impact mentoring has on youth at the Sixth Annual Youth Mentoring Day at the State House.
Framingham-based Staples, Inc. was a part of a Youth Mentoring Day at the State House on Jan. 19, where the Governor’s office officially declared January “Massachusetts Mentoring Month.” The event was part of a statewide public awareness and mentor recruitment campaign led by Mass Mentoring Partnership and Staples. Staples has donated $25,000 to Mass Mentoring Partnership annually since 2010 to build awareness and recruit caring adult mentors for 3,000 Massachusetts youth.
