SLIDE SHOW: Swanky '50s Party To Unveil Shoppers World Exhibit

Framingham History Center's newest exhibit Shoppers World 1951-1994 will be open this week on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

More than 200 people attended the preview opening of Framingham History Center's newest exhibit Shoppers World 1951-1994. Friday night at Edgell Memorial Library. The highlight of Friday's members only party was when Framingham Selectman Chair Charlie Sisitsky helped light up the old neon sign that stood high above Shoppers World. The exhibit will be open this school vacation week Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 adult, free for members and children. The exhibition features images, merchandise, and memorabilia that will be sure to bring you back to this “kinder, gentler shopping center," states the Framingham History Center's web site. VIDEO: Shoppers World Lights Up Framingham Again

Framingham Selectman Chair Charlie Sisitsky helped light up the the newest exhibit at the Framingham History Center: Shoppers World 1951-1994 Friday night.

More than 200 people attended the preview opening of Framingham History Center's newest exhibit Shoppers World 1951-1994. Friday night at Edgell Memorial Library. The highlight of the event was when Framingham Selectman Chair Charlie Sisitsky helped light up the old neon sign that stood high above Shoppers World. The sign had been stored in the basement of the History Center, since 1999; but for this special exhibit Malden's Dave Waller, a special effects specialist, and Natick's Jeff Crosby, an electrician, helped restore the sign for Friday night's festivities. Think about this... the classeness of the Old Shoppers World. And the strip maul that replaced it, a terrible thought. But developers want to tear down and put in it's place anything to turn a profit. They have no concern for the community or it historical icons that should be preserved and protected. :( (Sad what lies they tell the planning board and the board believes them)   more ›

Designed by Martin Milmore in 1872, The Soldier represents those from Framingham who gave their lives during the Civil War. Saturday's cleaning of the outdoor sculpture was in anticipation of a ceremony to preserve the Edgell Memorial Library and part of the Framingham History Center's Civil War Encampment weekend. Built to commemorate the valor of Civil War soldiers, Edgell Memorial Library was the town of Framinghams' first free-standing public library and remains a testament to the spirit of civic engagement and public service which built it, according to the Framingham History Center. The Library is a cultural pillar of the community, which rallied to build it in 1872 and once again to save it from demolition in 1963, according to the …

Historian Presents West Point Cadet With General Gordon Book For School's Archives

Framingham Historian Fred Wallace gave a copy of his book The Life of General George H. Gordon to West Point Cadet Corporal Jenna Vercollone, who will bring it back to West Point for its archives/library.

The Framingham History Center is open today from 1 to 4 p.m. Stop by to learn about Framingham's connection to the Civil War and General George Henry Gordon. On Wednesday, Framingham Historian Fred Wallace gave a copy of his book The Life of General George H. Gordon to West Point Cadet Corporal Jenna Vercollone, who will bring it back to West Point for its archives/library. General Gordon, who fought in the Civil War, was a West Point graduate. Vercollone, a sophomore, is a Lincoln-Sudbury graduate and a Lincoln resident. Admission to the library is free for history center members, $5 for others.

Take a Walking Tour of General Gordon's Framingham

Along the tour will be vignettes, featuring actors and actresses in period costume as General Gordon (twice), Congressman Charles R. Train, Mrs. Gordon and Julia Ward Howe at sites throughout the neighborhood.

George Henry Gordon was Framingham's most noteworthy figure of the Civil War. A resident of this town from early childhood, he embarked on a military career which took him to far corners of our nation, but his heart was always here at the family home on the banks of the Sudbury River.  With Framingham's iconic Center Common as the backdrop, this guided tour featuring four living history vignettes, will bring the period before, during and after the Civil War to life. It won't be hard to imagine with so many of the buildings and settings of George Gordon's childhood and later life intact.
