On the article What Age is Too Young for the Morning-After Pill?

ReplyIt should absolutely not require a prescription as the whole point is that it needs to be taken quickly. Taking time off work, making a doctor's appointment, and then getting to a pharmacy can make this not an option for many women. I think this should be in every woman's medicine cabinet as an emergency. Yeh, I just said that...
As to age, its a tough one. Parents certainly need to talk to their kids. Schools need to have sex education. Even so, emergencies happen. I just don't think there will be a line of 15 and under year olds at the local CVS for Plan B. Not to mention it costs $35-$50 (as opposed to $5 in Europe), which is a LOT of money for a high schooler!
In any case, it is much better for the woman/girl to take preventative measures such as plan B than to have to deal with an unwanted pregnancy.

On the article Does Your Community Have a Racism Problem?

ReplyMark, seems like you have a reading comprehension problem... Your comment here is like going to a school district meeting insisting to discuss the need to increase the police budget, useless. Unless you are trying to prove that racism is alive and well in your head, in which case I stand corrected. But I applaud your copy and pasting skills. Maybe re copy and paste over to that article, where the debate of your favorite topic is taking place?
As to racism in schools and communities. I think race will always be an issue as long as we have different people together. And that is a beautiful thing about this country and I think its important to always discuss these issues openly. High school is a good place to start (if not before) but I would disagree with the principle that its an isolated incident. It is hopefully a minority opinion but I don't think it is ever an isolated incident. It unfortunate that this sad minority spewing hate is always so freaking loud and in your face. And you can't reason with them because logic is not part of hate's rational. But it is a part of life and I am a firm believer of what doesn't kill you makes you stronger in that respect. Hopefully, the majority opinion will come out and it will be clear that it is not what was cowardly scrawled in that library.

Why do you say he is living here on "our dime"? Can you please cite to that information or is that just an assumption from thin air?

JoJo, There are laws as to who can stay and why. Obviously, you aren't aware of those laws otherwise you wouldn't be making such generalizations. I don't know enough about this guy's case to have an opinion whether he qualifies for relief but he certainly gets to present his case in court. That is why we have courts, no? Or should we just get rid of those too?

Michael, why do you assume that if a parent doesn't speak English that means he or she can't teach their kids anything? I did not (and do not) speak English at home and I would say my parents did all right in teaching me.

On the article What Do You Think of Gun Appreciation Day?

Ron, your point is that there should not be restrictions on gun ownership? Or am I missing it again? If that is your point, that is not the case today as there are many restrictions. And if it isn't, then great, we agree... There should be restrictions on gun ownership.
"Who died and left you in charge of anyone else's kids, let alone mine? You are not responsible for their safety, nor the school, nor the Police, nor society." Well, to start, lots of kids have died, thats who. Really? The school, police, nor our community isn't responsible for the safety of children? So only parents are in charge of each of their children?
Comparing prohibiting/restricting certain guns to prohibiting cars is just ridiculous and shows a lack of any reasoning. Do you really mean to say you can't differentiate between car ACCIDENTS and gun murders? Why do you think there isn't the same outrage over children killed in car accidents? No reason, right? They are totally comparable?
Who am I to suggest regulation and control what you do? Uh, thats how things work here. We make laws as a society deciding who can own what, who can smoke what, and even who can marry whom. We vote for those that share our opinions and thats how we enact regulation. Seems like public opinion is clear on this issue and we will see that throughout the coming months. Works for me.

Hi Ron. No, I am not wrong. I am entitled to my opinion just like you are to yours. Its a lovely thing... I am not content with saying: "Yes, we all suffer. Thats life. People make mistakes that cost others their lives". That doesn't work for me when children are executed in schools. Those are not the kinds of mistakes I am ok with making it easy for people to make. In my opinion, there is no need for anyone to own those weapons, with very limited exceptions.

OK, so it is her fault he got the gun. And there are responsible gun owners. Fine... No one is debating that... But now what? As a society we need to make sure that people do not have the option to make a mistake in that kind of fire arm keeping. We all suffer from those mistakes and it is not a risk I am willing to take.
