Framingham State Student Loses Both Legs After Route 9 Motorcycle Crash

The junior at Framingham State University was a criminal justice major with the hopes of being a state trooper.

A Framingham State University student, involved in a motorcycle crash on Route 9 in Framingham, has had both his legs amputated and is still recovering from the Saturday night crash.

Anthony Spinelli, 20, struck a guard rail on Saturday, Oct. 19, in a crash that closed Route 9.

A junior at Framingham State, with a major in criminal justice, he had hopes of being a state trooper.

A Facebook page was started by family and friends and as of midnight, it had 1,880 fans.

Spinelli is "avid skier, snowboarded, and surfer," states a post on that Facebook page. "He is alive and going to make it but has a long road to recovery ahead of him."

Spinelli lost one leg following the crash and had the second one amputated on Oct. 22.

On the Anthony Spinelli Support Facebook page the last update said "Anthony is in a lot of pain, but he has been able to look on the bright side of everything thrown at him."

The crash took place on Saturday, Oct. 19 just after 11:30 p.m. and shut down Route 9 in Framingham right after Temple Street.

Witness Brad Robillard told Framingham Patch "When I got there I was able to put a few belts around his legs to hopefully help any bleeding. I wish him the best on his recovery."

"Our au pair was on the scene as well, and I believe he was helping you with the belts, Brad," wrote Patch reader Sheri Gurock.

Witness Ted E. posted on Framingham Patch "I was behind this motorcyclist when he crashed and was the one who called 911 when it happened... He blew by me in the left hand lane going west bound, and didn't lean over enough to make the curve in the road... It looked like he was anticipating the curve by changing lanes in front of me, but as the curve came up he drifted back into the left lane until he hit the curb, the rider high sided over the guard rail and landed in the east bound lanes, the bike pretty much exploded on impact, shrapnel from the bike was all over the road and it was was sparking down the road as it slid... It was horrible to witness... I hope he is alright."
