Early in the afternoon of May 22, 1856, South Carolina Congressman Preston Brooks strode into the Senate and began beating Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner with a gold-topped walking cane, an act of retaliation that destroyed any pretense of civility between the North and South. This Assault will be the focus of tonight's free lecture in the Costin Room at the Lexington Street library.

BONUS EVENT: The Danforth Art School Gallery will hold an artists' reception tonight from 6 to 8 for the work of six Danforth Art students who are each exhibiting a series of three to eight works created in response to the class, Painting a Series.

Under the direction of artist and instructor Nan Hass Feldman, students were directed to choose a theme, a medium or mediums, and a technique to focus on to develop a cohesive body of work—one where each idea could evolve and inform the works that followed.

Exhibiting artists are: Sandra Simoes, Lucille Nava, Marjorie Anderson, Shannon Astolfi, Judy Schneider, and Tom Sullivan.
